Your chances of success in any undertaking can
always be measured by your belief in yourself.”
-Author Robert Collier
When we embark on a self-improvement journey, a conflicting mix of enthusiasm and self-defeating emotions is common. Wrestling with pros and cons as we try to embrace new lifestyle patterns is part of how we change. For change to take hold, the pros must outweigh the cons. Grounding our thoughts in positive, self-affirming ways has enormous effects on the ease of our journey and the likelihood of morphing into healthier versions of ourselves.
Focusing on the new habits we want to build is the most effective approach to change (vs. trying to eliminate ingrained habits that don’t support our health.) Viewing change as a process and not expecting perfection of ourselves is helpful, too.
When we focus on the habits we want to break, it tends to be negative. Same is true for focusing on the consequences of those habits. For example, ruminating, “I dislike my shape." Or, "if only I could kick this soda/sweets habit, I’d see progress with my weight loss,” is negative and self-defeating. It can zap our energy to improve.
On the positive and supportive side, if your thoughts are focused on the change you desire—the best version of yourself that you want to become, and the habits you want to adopt—the positivity becomes fuel for your journey. For example, “By being active and eating whole foods, I’ll get closer to my goal weight, be healthier and feel more energetic every day.”
Choose your thoughts with care as they will become your reality.
